AWD and 4WD – What’s the Difference?

Do you need the extra traction offered by All-Wheel-Drive or Four-Wheel-Drive? If you drive off-road or in an area with tricky terrain, then you probably do. The conditions you drive in will determine the option best for you, and the Barnes Crossing Mitsubishi team is ready to help.

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) is generally an option on many types of crossovers and cars. It uses a front, rear and center differential to send power to all the wheels at once. Conversely, Four-Wheel-Drive is employed on trucks and larger SUVs. It works with two differentials and a transfer case.

AWD is a great option if you are not going to be driving off-road or on slippery roads more than a few times per year. The driver doesn't have to choose when to engage it and remember to disengage it when it’s no longer needed. 4WD is better if you live in an area where snow and ice are common.
